It’s official, “The Exorcist,” the critically well-received horror series from FOX has been renewed for season 2. Following this news however, is a rather disappointing one. Geena Davis, who plays Angela Rance (possessed by the devil at the end of season 1), won’t be returning to the show along with the entire cast who plays the Rance family.
“The Exorcist” was created by Jeremy Slater and is based on the 1973 horror movie of the same name directed by William Friedkin. The show has enjoyed many favorable reviews, with the season finale giving fans an intense story to call in the second season.
The Exorcist Season 2 Gears Up For A New Story
“The Exorcist” has been a hit due to the on screen presence of Davis, who plays the older Regan Macneil. She goes by the name Angela Rance, after being married to Henry Rance and in an attempt to hide her past. The hit horror TV show has been more than successful in attracting audience ratings. It’s very unfortunate to hear about Davis and the entire Rance family cast departing the series.
In a report by TVLine, the entire Rance family—Davis as Angela, Alan Ruck as Henry, Hannah Kasulka as Casey and Brianne Howey as Katherine—will not be back for FOX’s “The Exorcist” season 2. While the spiritually powerful trio of Catholic priests made up of Alfonso Herrera as Father Tomas Ortega, Kurt Egyiawan as Father Bennett, and Ben Daniels as excommunicated Father Marcus Keane will be returning, creator Slater said that he plans to have a different story arc for the next season.
Slater initially planned to give an appropriate beginning and end to season 1, and now he plans to continue “The Exorcist” without the entire Rance family. He explains that the challenge for season 2 “would be to come up with a new storyline that was just as exciting and emotionally gripping,” but fans can rest assured because “that doesn’t mean we won’t see the Rance family again.”
It’s interesting how Slater plans to move on without the Rance family, but whatever new horrors he’s cooking up for season 2, we’re pretty sure that fresh, new demons will be wreaking havoc once again.
“The Exorcist” returns this fall on FOX.
