Winter is here and the show is gearing up for an epic battle with the White Walkers. The invasion of the White Walkers has been teased since the very first episode of “Game of Thrones.”
Before the battle starts, the wall is coming down making way for the Night King’s army to invade Westeros.
There are numerous fan theories on the internet that discuss the role of the White Walkers and it’s crucial to understand this mythological threat to the Seven Kingdoms. Especially when the show has given very little backstory to the true villains of their tale. So what do this undead, frozen soldiers have planned for invading Westeros?
Bran Stark Weakens The Wall For The White Walkers
It seems impossible for a three hundred miles long and seven hundred feet high wall of ice can be easily taken down. But in “Game of Thrones,” the impossible is not in the show’s dialogue. Dragons exist and shadow babies can kill kings. So breaking down a gigantic wall of ice that was constructed 8,000 years ago sounds almost plausible.
Viewers should remember that the show also has magical and mythological elements. One of the most logical theories draws back from the Season 6 episode “The Door.” The episode featured Bran Stark seeing a vision of the Army of the Dead. In that said vision, the Night King saw Bran and grabbed his arm placing a mark of ice on his skin.
In the same episode, Bran, Meera Reed, and Hodor have been living inside the Three-Eyed Raven’s Weirwood cave. The cave was located beyond the wall and protected by various magical enchantments. These spells kept the White Walkers from finding them and trespassing. But the mark the Night King gave Bran weakened the magic protection making it easy for his Army of the Dead to cross the cave’s threshold.
Now, Bran has returned to Westeros. This can mean his presence has rendered the magical protections of the wall. The same way his presence in the Three-Eyed Raven’s Weirwood cave has nullified its enchantments. The question remains if the Night King’s mark was temporary or permanent. If permanent, Bran Stark has carried the mark south of the wall.
This could mean the Army of the Dead will be able to pass beyond the Wall.
The Hound’s Vision In The Flames Bring Ice
The first episode of Season 7, “Dragonstone”, Sandor “the Hound” Clegane looked into a fire and saw a vision of the dead invading Westeros. This could either be a foreshadowing a major plot point or a red herring to distract viewers.
But in the Hound’s vision, he saw the Army of the Dead walk around the wall atop the newly frozen-over body of water on the eastern edge of the wall. Keen fans have also observed this during the Game of Thrones Season 7 opening credits.
The show has a wonderful animation of the map of Westeros for their opening credits. But this season it’s different when the credits show the Wall the body of water beside it is now ice.
The Hound even gave so much detail and clarity describing the vision in the flames. So it is possible the Night King’s Army will be walking through the Bay of Seals.
Bran Stark Is The Night King Trying To Save Westeros
Theories about Bran Stark and the Night King are surfacing on the net. Leading to many fans considering that the Night King is Bran Stark. According to this theory, Bran will eventually lose himself while traveling through time and wind up creating the very evil he is trying to prevent. It is important to note during Season 6, Bran learns he may never walk again but he can fly. Fly in the sense of time. He was able to fly through time and meet his aunt Lyanna and whisper to the Mad King.
The young Stark boy believes he can eventually rewrite history. In season 6, Bran wargs back in time to meet the Children of the Forest which lead to the creation of the white walkers. As he wakes up from the vision he confronts the leader of the Children of the Forest who later tells Bran they needed to defend themselves. From who? The leader of the Children of the Forest pauses and said to him “From you.”
Could Bran be the Night King? Did he go to Westeros and help in the breaching the wall?
Game of Thrones has not only stirred up interest but the minds of viewers. Thier cliffhangers, foreshadowing and red herrings of major plot points created online discussions. Whether or not any of these theories are true or not. The inevitable battle with the White Walkers is coming; Jon Snow better hurry up with that dragon glass.
