'Game of Thrones:' What Was the Letter That Varys Was Writing?

This article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 episode 5, “The Bells.”

With the second to the last episode of the final season of Game of Thrones, we lost a chunk of major characters and a whole freaking city. The great war was won. And now, Daenerys is only a breath away from sitting on the Iron Throne. Before all that, she lost most of her closest allies to death and to betrayal. The most recent one is of her close advisers, Varys.

The Last Betrayal of Varys

At the beginning of the episode, Varys was writing raven letters spilling the secrets about Jon’s true heritage and Daenerys’ false claim to the throne. In the last episode, he already threatened Tyrion despite the latter’s plea. However, Varys didn’t get to fulfill his whole plan. Sadly, his own friend Tyrion sold him out to the queen. At the end of the day, Daenerys caught him and burned him alive for treason.

However, before his arrest, some time had passed from when he was writing the letters. And one can only assume that he managed to send some of them out before his demise especially that he still had little birdies working for him in Dragonstone. But, to whom?

Knowing Varys’ cunning, it may be safe to say that he sent those letters to the people who mattered. These people are the ones who may or may not be able to stop Daenerys from taking the throne particularly the remaining lords of Westeros. Because one way or another, with Dany’s false claim out, there will always be resistance to her rule.

According to an Entertainment Weekly with Lord Varys actor Conleth Hill, he was inconsolable at first over his character death. Nobody warned him and he can’t help but take it a little personally. But, he maintains that Vary’s betrayal was brilliant and noble. After all, Varys has always proclaimed that he works for the people of the realm. And he only wants to see a rightful ruler on the throne. And up until the end, he was true to his word. Unfortunately, claims to the throne seems to take a seat behind who can hold it. Just look at Cersei. And at this point in Game of Thrones, after her disappointing fiery conquer, Daenerys seems to have the situation wrapped around her finger.

Game of Thrones continues next Sunday at 9/8c on HBO.
