In previous years, Freddie Highmore has not only showcased his prowess in acting but also in writing and directing. Now, The Good Doctor star is on his way to TBS for a new project as a producer of his half-hour dark comedy series Homesick according to Deadline.
Highmore co-wrote the series with British writer James Mitchell which is also based on Mitchell’s personal experience. Homesick will explore the themes of mental health, body image, toxic masculinity, and what it means to defy “normal” expectations of gender. It chronicles the dysfunctional relationship between a self-destructive twenty-something, secretly suffering from an eating disorder, and his mother, a raging narcissist and a total enabler who also happens to be his best friend in the world (for better or worse).
The project hails from Highmore’s studio-based banner Alfresco Pictures and Sony Pictures TV. And aside from co-writing, Highmore will also be executive producing. Mitchell together with Alfresco’s head of development Claire Londy will be co-executive producing.
Freddie Highmore Expands His Producing Ventures
This new series marks the second project for Highmore and Alfresco Pictures to come out of the two-year overall production deal that Highmore signed with Sony TV last year. Homesick follows Love, Dad which was Alfresco’s first project to go into development under the deal at ABC last season. It will join TBS’ roster of original comedies that include American Dad, The Last O.G., and The Detour.
Highmore stepped into the acting spotlight at a very young age and made his debut in the comedy film Women Talking Dirty. Since then, he has nabbed starring roles in films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, August Rush, and Finding Neverland. He’s currently starring in ABC’s The Good Doctor which is set to premiere its third season this September.
In addition to acting, Highmore has also been actively writing, directing, and producing in the previous years of his career. In fact, he’s currently serving as a co-executive producer on The Good Doctor. On top of that, he wrote the second season premiere of the series and he also directed an episode in the same season. Highmore will be reprising the same roles in Season 3. But, the series that really kickstarted his writing and debuting stunts is A&E’s Bates Motel.
Freddie Highmore is repped by ARG, UTA, and Felker Toczek. Mitchell is repped by Independent Talent Group and Frankfurt Kurnit.
