James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy had debuted back in 2014, and nine years later, we’ll be seeing the end of this iteration of the Guardians with GOTG Vol. 3.
Thanks to Comic Con Experience Brazil (CCXP 2022), we have our first trailer, and it shows the return of the old Guardians as well as the debut of some new characters like Adam Warlock. Check this out:
We don’t have an official breakdown of the story yet, but it has been said that the movie will bring the Guardians back to their origins—specifically with Rocket and his supposed creator the High Evolutionary (Peacemaker’s Chukwudi Iwuji). The story also doesn’t hold back on the return of Gamora, who had been missing since the events of Avengers: Endgame.
Admittedly, the Guardians have a very unique status when it comes to the MCU, considering that they were general unknowns before the 2014 movie came out. Even before 2008, Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America were already considered big names in the comics. With the movie though, the Guardians had suddenly become household names, with general audiences being familiar with weird characters like Rocket, Groot, and Star-Lord.
It’s going to be sad to see this iteration of the Guardians go, but I would be happy if they managed to lay out plans for new members of the group. With Gunn moving on to DC, I would love to see someone else take on the franchise.
Catch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 when it debuts in theaters on May 5, 2023.
