George, Phil, and Mae arrive at Mae’s house. Mae tells them that her parents know nothing about Scott and the real reason they are all there before coming on. Mae’s parents hug Phil and say they are sorry for his loss. Over dinner, Phil shares that he is the reason why his dad left their family. Linda tells them about how Mae stole her ornamental pears, and Mae denies it.
The next day, Linda walks in on George and Mae making out. She tells them that her physical proximity is required because she does not trust Mae.
George tells Mae that she should confront Scott because that is why they are there and asks her if she stole the pears. Mae tells her to trust her and that she’ll go, but she stays on the roof instead. She tells George that confronting Scott is a big, personal thing for her, and she has to be able to do it in her way. Mae finds her parents trying to get a urine sample from the toilet bowl so they can test it for drugs. She tells them they could have just asked and puts her pants down.
Phil, George, and Mae eat at a restaurant, but Mae’s parents are outside watching their every move. Phil tells George and Mae that they are a lot as a couple, wrapped up in their problems. He says he had never heard the have a conversation about science. He distracts Mae’s parents so Mae and George can sneak out. While walking, Mae bumps into Danny, who asks if Inkboy knows she is in town. Mae refuses to answer.
Mae and George get to a bar, and when Mae notices that a girl has been staring at George for a long time, she asks George to approach the girl and flirt with her. After flirting with the girl, Mae tells George that what she did was hot. Mae sees someone from a distance and tells George they should get out of there. They go and eat hotdogs. However, before they can enjoy their food any longer, the people from the bar see them, and they run.
Mae tells George that he is her drug dealer and she owes him. They end up in the street where Mae used to live with Scott. They get closer to the house, and Mae shows George where her room is as she opens up about how she thought she was moving in with a friend when he moved in with Scott. They notice that a woman is sleeping in that room. The woman awakens and screams, so they run. The people from the bar call out for Mae, so they hide in a parked car. They have sex, but right in the middle of it, Mae asks George to stop saying that she wishes she knew what kind of person she would have been if she had not met Scott. She cries, and George hugs her.
The next morning, Mae asks her parents to trust her, but Linda says she cannot trust her when she cannot come clean about stealing the ornamental pears. Malcolm asks them to enter the garden when he digs out a box containing ornamental pears. He says that he knocked one of the pears broken and decided to bury the rest. He says he didn’t know Linda would blame Mae and thought it was too late for him to admit that he was involved.
Linda tells Mae that there are things bout Mae she hasn’t asked about simply because she didn’t want to know. She says that she cannot be blamed for not wanting to know, and Mae tells her that she does not blame her. Mae tells her parents that she wants to start fresh, and Malcolm tells them that they should not keep anything from each other from then on. They hug.
George and Phil watch them hug from inside the house. When they go in, Mae tells Phil about the nature trip she has planned with George. Phil says that he has committed to fixing Malcolm’s bird feeder, so Mae tells him that he can stay if he likes. Malcolm tells Phil to stay as long as he likes, while Linda tells him to stay forever. A tear falls down Phil’s cheek.
As George and Mae get in the car, Mae tells George they must stop by the comedy bar.
Mae confronts Scott. Scott is a pedophile who took in Mae because she had nowhere to go, and even asked for her to marry him. He says that he did it because he felt like he was entitled to some relief because he was literally paying for their lives. He tells Mae that he has truly loved her and that she could blame him for the bad things that happened to her, but the truth is that she was already messed up when she came to him. Mae gets mad at Scott but hugs him, but then Mae tells him that she does not want to talk to him or see him again.
George and Mae go on their nature trip and finally talk about science.
Our Thoughts
Well, at least we know about Mae’s trauma, so we understand her even more. Confronting Scott like that must have been hard, and it is big of Mae to do it. Mae is getting a new beginning with her parents, which we have wanted for so long already, so we are glad they have finally reconciled for real. I mean, those ornamental pears have had me curious for a long time already. This ending was not as eventful as other endings, but I guess the nature trip, with George and Mae finally feeling good about each other is a great ending nevertheless.
