Mae imagines that she is talking to Scott, but she is ignoring Scott’s text, following what the unknown lady has told her.
George arranges an extracurricular activity at school, where students will present about causes they believe in, including climate change and trans rights. She thanks Elliot for being cool after they broke up.
Mae does an act about saving the world, and the audience doesn’t pick it up, so Nick tells Mae to rest and go home so she can refresh her ideas. Nick asks Pete to do Mae’s late-night show. Nick signs with Donna, and Mae thinks that he has betrayed her.
On her way home, Mae meets two women who came from Norway to see her show. She thinks she sees Scott from a distance, but it is all in her head. Since she is no longer doing the late-night show, she asks them if they would like to go to her house. They do, and Mae performs in the living room. George tells Mae they are having a social activism presentation at school, and it is all her idea. She says she wants to go on a holiday during school break, but Mae tells her she is not in the mood to go out.
George calls Mae to bring something she has left to school. George sends a student, Tia, to retrieve it from Mae. Mae tells Tia that she doesn’t get the point of saving bees and that she thinks that in 5 million years the earth is going to be a frozen rock with or without bees and that humankind will have probably nuked themselves into oblivion long before then. Tia decides not to continue her presentation about the bees.
Elliot tells George that in their relationship, George is always the gardener, and Mae is always the bonsai. He says that there should be someone to tend to George as well.
George confronts Mae for saying things to Tia. Mae tells George that she thinks the world is not worth saving and that George is setting the children up for failure by making them think that the world is a magical place. George says that she is finally deciding to do something for herself, and Mae distracts her with her nervous breakdown. Mae apologizes for having PTSD sarcastically. Geoge tells her to let whatever happened to her go if she is not going to do anything about it. Mae imaging seeing Scott on the couch behind George. She walks away to continue her show downstairs.
The next day, Phil asks Mae to hang out, but Mae isn’t interested. She says she’ll have a show in the living in an hour, and Phil informs her that he has bought all the tickets. Upon knowing this, Mae tells him that she will just go to sleep. She stops ignoring Phil when he says he has just learned that his father is already dead and wants to have hot chocolate with his friend.
Phil says sorry for Mae for conniving with her parents to spy on her. He says that he loves her that’s why he did it. On cue, Pete, Nick, and Jack come out of hiding for an intervention. They take turns to tell Mae how the world is not such a bad place to be in and that she is loved by many. Mae realizes how she has been focused on herself only, so she says that she wants to do something for them. Phil tells her that George is the one who needs her that very moment.
George’s mom and dad come for the presentation. Elliot’s many girlfriends and boyfriends come as well. Tia tells George she does not want to sing and asks George to sing her song for her instead. Mae comes and watches as George sings. She is about to leave when Eliot sees her and tells her that George was pretty distraught that she was not there from the beginning. Mae asks for advice on what she needs to do for George, and Elliot tells her that she should tell George how she feels in front of everyone.
Mae gets a costume and gets Clocky to play an instrumental as she proposes to Mae on stage. George asks Mae if she knows her middle name, and when Mae tells her that she doesn’t know, she says she is not going to marry her.
George asks her parents what she needs to do, and her parents tell her to be the captain of her boat.
George comes home and sees Mae packing. Mae says she is going to Canada to deal with things she thinks are holding her back. George gets her suitcase and packs it with Mae. She says she is going to Canada with her.
Phil is doing a sculpture of his father when George and Mae come to his room. George tells him they want him to go to Canada with them and that they have already bought his plane ticket. They all hug.
Our Thoughts
Oh, taking Phil with them to Canada is unexpected, and we are so happy that finally, Phil will feel that he is loved and appreciated in that household. Mae’s proposal surprised us, but what surprised us more was that George decides to stay with her even after rejecting her proposal. That is a mature way of handling things, considering everything that has happened between them. Oh, and George coming to Canada, finally, is something we have been waiting for, just like we have been waiting to find out what the real deal is with Scott.
