'Family Guy' Pledges To Turn Back From Gay Jokes

FOX’s Family Guy has finally taken the hints and is pledging to phase out gay jokes from here on out.

On Sunday night, the cartoon sitcom aired the episode “Trump Guy.” Peter Griffin becomes Trump’s new White House press secretary. However, after Griffin discovers Trump harassing his daughter Meg, Griffin and Trump engage in a world war kind of brawl.

In the battle, Trump accuses Griffin’s show of being the source of children’s favorite Jewish, black and gay jokes. In response, Griffin says “in fairness, we’ve been trying to phase out the gay stuff. But you know what? We’re a cartoon. You’re the president.”

After the episode aired, executive producers Alec Sulkin and Rich Appel confirmed the move and backed their commitment to it in an interview with TVLine.

“If you look at a show from 2005 or 2006 and put it side by side with a show from 2018 or 2019, they’re going to have a few differences. Some of the things we felt comfortable saying and joking about back then, we now understand is not acceptable,” Sulkin said.

Appel noted how the climate, culture, and views have changed and have in turn affected the show. “If a show has literally been on the air for 20 years, the culture changes. And it’s not us reacting and thinking, ‘they won’t let us [say certain things].’ No, we’ve changed too,” Appel said. “The climate is different, the culture is different and our views are different. They’ve been shaped by the reality around us, so I think the show has to shift and evolve in a lot of different ways.”

Family Guy has been notorious for its consistent and offensive jokes towards countless marginalized sectors over the years. However, it has stayed true to its promise. Proof comes in Stewie’s coming-out episode in 2018. There is also the promised future episode where Quagmire, Family Guy’s resident womanizer and sexual assaulter, will face the consequences of his actions.
