Disney may be dominating the news cycle this weekend with the D23 Expo, but Steven Spielberg’s entry at the Toronto International Film Festival—The Fabelmans —has been getting a lot of attention.
Just in, we have a trailer for The Fabelmans starring Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Judd Hirsch:
Here’s the story description:
Loosely based on Spielberg’s childhood growing up in post-World War II era Arizona, from age seven to eighteen, a young man named Sammy Fabelman discovers a shattering family secret, and explores how the power of movies help us see the truth about each other and ourselves.
While the story may be fictional, you can feel that a lot of the elements come from real-life—specifically Spielberg’s life. You can even recognize callbacks to his older films, from kids on bikes (E.T.) to anti-semitism (Schindler’s List). At 75 years of age, it’s interesting that Spielberg is still able to churn out these kinds of stories—especially after his hit with West Side Story last year.
I guess it’s also interesting that Spielberg should have Paul Dano cast as the disapproving father in this film. With Dano’s turn as the Riddler in The Batman earlier this year, it’s going to be interesting to watch him be somewhat of a wholesome father. Albeit, he’s still disapproving when it comes to Sammy’s ‘hobby’, but I think there’s an interesting message there about art and how it relates to your life and relationships.
The Fabelmans is currently screening at TIFF 2022, but you can watch out for the movie when it hits mainstream theaters on Nov. 23, 2022.
