While the first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi felt nice and contained, it did end with a teaser for more things to come. A second season hasn’t been officially announced, but Ewan McGregor does express a desire to come back.
Talking during a Celebrity Fan Fest event (via @sw_holocron), McGregor says:
“I’m totally up for it, guys. I want to do it. I’m absolutely honest, there’s no plans made yet. But I think, I’m pretty sure they’re just biding their time.”
A second season does make sense for Kenobi, as it’s been said that they originally planned to make a new trilogy of films for Obi-Wan, with the events of the first movie happening in the first season. Since Solo: A Star Wars Story didn’t perform as well as Lucasfilm hoped, plans for the Kenobi film were scrapped, and they were all reworked into a series.
Since three movies were planned, I think it would be pretty easy to just take the plot of the next two movies and use that for the following seasons. I guess Lucasfilm is just waiting out the reactions for the show, seeing that audience reception is now starting to sour after the release of The Book of Boba Fett.
If you ask me, Kenobi would have done really well as a movie. Spectacle has always been a huge part of Star Wars, and it’s always been spared because of the limitations of television when it comes to time and budget. Despite the praise, a lot of fans do think that the Star Wars shows do tend to have a lot of filler for a story that could easily take place over a 2-hour film.
It’s unclear if Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 is happening, but you can watch the complete first season now on Disney+.
