J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth might be coming back this September, but HBO is going to be bringing us to Westeros in August with their Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon. Just in, we have a batch of new stills from the show via Entertainment Weekly, and it gives us a good look at the central Targaryens in the story including Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Daemon (Matt Smith).

D’Arcy, who uses they/them pronouns, talks a bit about Rhaenyra as a character and how they read her struggle. They tell EW, “She’s someone I think who’s at odds with her gender, as a result of the position she finds herself in. You have someone whose womanhood is at odds with the role that they’ve been awarded.”
If you haven’t done your House of the Dragon homework, the series will focus on what is referred to as the ‘Dance of Dragons’ a.k.a. the Targaryen Civil War. Though we’ve seen a lone Targaryen’s conquest in the original Game of Thrones series, we have yet to watch them actually clash with one another (for a prolonged time, that is).
While subreuddits will endlessly complain about the Game of Thrones finale online, some fans are excited to come back to the world of Westeros. The lore is still pretty rich, and even though you didn’t like how Danny’s story ended, there’s still a chance to continue the story with the upcoming Jon Snow-centric sequel.
House of the Dragon comes to HBO Max on Aug. 21.
