Enter the World of the Yakuza in New Trailer for Tokyo Vice

Ansel Elgort may be ‘cancelled’ by Twitter, but that hasn’t stopped him from landing a job with HBO Max alongside Ken Watanabe. The streaming service has just dropped a trailer for Tokyo Vice, and it promises an intimate look at organized crime in the heart of Tokyo.

Watch this:

Based on Jake Adelstein’s non-fiction first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat, starring Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe. The drama captures Adelstein’s daily descent into the neon-soaked underbelly of Tokyo, where nothing and no one is truly what or who they seem.

Besides Elgort and Watanabe, the series has also cast some established talent from Japan like Shun Sugata and Kosuke Toyohara. Guillermo del Toro fans will also recognize Rinko Kikuchi, who played Mako in the Pacific Rim films.

The series is said to take place in the 90s, and will follow Jake Adelstein (Elgort) as he uncovers the truth about Tokyo during his 12-year stay. Adelstein was said to have really gotten under the skin of the mob that they started sending him death threats, and his memoir also covered the different work ethics of working for the Japanese press, with the 80-hour work weeks and the strain it caused his personal relationships.

We don’t know if Elgort landed this job before the controversies started coming out, but HBO Max probably has no choice but to promote the guy playing the main character. I guess being in the critically acclaimed West Side Story also didn’t hurt Elgort’s chances.

Tokyo Vice starts streaming on HBO Max on April 7.
