Emma Stone In Talks for 'Cruella de Vil' 80's Punk Movie Lead Role

After starring in 2016’s Oscar-winning flick, La La Land, Emma Stone is heading towards a role that we might not have seen her play before. She’s currently in negotiations to star in the live-action Cruella de Vil movie from Disney. And get this, it’s not the usual Disney villain story but something a little bit more “current” in terms of its pop culture themes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 101 Dalmatians villain will have her own “origin story” that’s far from how Disney portrayed her character before. The narrative will revolve around the dog-hating fashionista as she makes her way into villainry in an 80’s punk setting. Stone seems to be the perfect actress to give life to the lead role.

Alex Timbers was first in line to helm the project but had to depart due to scheduling issues with his two Broadway shows opening next year, the adaptations of Moulin Rouge and Beetlejuice. Following Timbers’ exit, I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie is now in early talks as well to direct the Cruella de Vil movie.

The villain first appeared in 1961 classic animated movie 101 Dalmatians and spawned a few animated series along the way. Glenn Close then portrayed de Vil in the big screen in the 101 Dalmatians live-action remake. In it, de Vil was the owner of a well-known fashion house and had a sinister plan to acquire all the dalmatians to use their fur as part of her fashion collection.

No other details were given about the Cruella de Vil movie, apart from its current production date target in 2019 and theatrical release sometime in 2020.
