Morbius may not have been the hit Sony was expecting it to be, but that won’t stop them from trying to build a franchise around every character related to Spider-Man. One incoming spinoff is Madame Web which has Dakota Johnson as the lead, and the film has announced a new cast member.
THR reports that Emma Roberts has joined the cast of Spider-Man spinoff Madame Web. No details have been released about Roberts’ character, but we do know that she’ll be joining a cast of some of the strongest young actresses today; besides Johnson, the film also includes Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) and Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold).
Since the Madame Web fans know from the comics is old, blind, and paralyzed, it’s curious how Sony is going to be treating the character with Dakota Johnson onboard. If anything, Madame Web has all the makings of a supporting character, but if they plan to make her the lead, I’m sure they are going to be putting in some changes to make her a more marketable superheroine—at least, that’s my guess.
For now, Sony is currently working on production for Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Though fans would have loved to see him clash with Spider-Man, it looks like Sony is going to be giving him the ‘anti-hero’ story treatment like they did with Venom and Morbius. Since Madame Web is more of an ally to Spider-Man in the comics, maybe we can expect a more different story with her. Until Sony makes the reveal, all we can do is wait.
Madame Web comes to theaters on July 7, 2023.
