Emma Mackey: Barbie Cast had a Huge Sleepover

We’ve known for a while that Ncuti Gatwa will be in the Barbie movie, but some forget that his Sex Education co-star Emma Macket is also part of the cast.

In a recent interview with Empire, Mackey talks about the bonding with the rest of the Barbie actors, and says that they had a huge sleepover hosted by Gatwa and Scott Evans. She says:

“Right in the beginning, we had a sleepover for the Barbies, which would involve playing games with Scott Evans] and Ncuti [Gatwa]… I don’t play games usually, because I get so competitive and angry. But Scott and I were top of the game.”

What’s interesting is that Mackey states that the ‘Barbies’ (as in plural) had a sleepover, which kind of confirms the rumor that the film will feature different versions of Barbie besides Margot Robbie’s. We don’t know who Mackey is playing in the movie yet, but since she looks so much like Robbie, some are guessing she could be Barbie’s sister—then again, it’s possible she could be an English Barbie.

Mackey also says about the movie, “Barbie is light and funny and silly and American and pink.” She also sings her praises about director Greta Gerwig who she says is ‘everything I could have dreamed of.’

Despite the movie being described as kid-friendly, I have a feeling that we’re still going to get some strong, mature themes; especially with Gerwig and Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story) working on the script.

Barbie is set to come to cinemas on July 21, 2023.
