Arriving at her building from her routine jog, the landlady tells Emily a package has arrived for her. She picks up the box and brings it upstairs. Mindy hovers as Emily opens it. Emily tells her it’s from her parents; it’s her birthday the next day. Emily tells her she has nothing to celebrate, so she doesn’t want to do anything for her birthday. Mindy insists on throwing a dinner party. Emily obliges.
Emily and Mindy step out and pick a spot outside the building to plan where they will have the party. Gabriel walks by, and Emily invites her to the dinner party. He tells her he’ll come and bake her a cake as his present. Mindy goes back inside and leaves Emily and Gabriel alone to talk.
Gabriel asks Emily what happened with Mathieu. She tells him he overheard their conversation, so he refused to go with her. Emily points out it is the right move because he is a client, and she is now all about doing the right thing with clients and neighbors.
Mindy confronts Emily through text about inviting Gabriel to the party. She tells Mindy she did it to get him and Camille back together. Emily calls Camille to invite her too, and she happily agrees to come. She tells Emily she has the perfect gift for her and asks her to come to the hammam with her friends.
Emily walks alongside Sylvie to the office. She asks her when she returned to Paris. Sylvie tells her she came back that morning and further elaborates that she and Laurent G have been married for a long time, don’t live together, and don’t have any children.
Before wrapping up a meeting, Emily tells Julien, Luc, and Sylvie that Rimowa loved the Cadault collab, and she’s hoping Rimowa’s enthusiasm will sway Pierre. She also invites them to her birthday dinner the following night. Luc tells her he’ll be there; Julien says the same. Sylvie thanks her for the invitation but tells her that Pierre is not swayable to the idea of working with Rimowa. She says Pierre was on the verge of firing Savoir, but Julien saved the day. She tells Emily that Julien now owns the Cadault account.
Emily confronts Julien about stealing Pierre from her. Julien tells her she was the one who actually stole Rimowa from him. Luc comes and stops them from arguing. Julien tells Emily he was looking forward to her party, but Emily disinvites him. Emily tells him he’s still invited.
Camille brings Emily to the hammam, which turns out to be a place for public bathing. Camille’s friends come. While enjoying a bath, they ask Camille what’s going on with Gabriel. She tells them it feels different, but she’s confident there is no one else, just his restaurant. They even talk about no one getting between Gabriel and his pans and a particular omelet pan with his initials no one can touch.
After the bath, Camille asks Emily if she had fun and tells her that her friends really liked her. Emily tells her she had fun too. She tells Camille she invited Gabriel to her party. Camille gets upset and asks Emily why she would do that; she’s not sure if she’s coming anymore. Emily begs her to go, saying her birthday is the perfect opportunity for them to talk.
As they were talking, Camille sees Mathieu sitting at a nearby cafe. Emily tells her he’s the last person she wants to see after being kicked out from Pierre’s account following the Saint-Tropez incident. Emily leaves; Camille confronts Mathieu.
Camille tells Mathieu he dumped her and got her fired from their account. He tells her he did not have her kicked from the account; Emily did it to herself. He also defends himself, saying he found out Emily is having an affair, so he decided not to go with her to Saint-Tropez.
On Emily’s birthday, she receives lots of greetings on Instagram. But upon arriving at the office, she frowns when she sees that Rimowa sent her more suitcases with Pierre’s face on them. She tells Julien and Luc she is yet to tell Rimowa that Pierre isn’t going to do the collab. She also tells them she will not deal with the Rimowa account that day as a present to herself. Julien gives her a box that also came for her. She opens it and sees her favorite Deep Dish Pizza from Madeline. She takes a photo and thanks Madeline for it.
Sylvie comes and comments on the smell. When Julien points to the deep-dish pizza, she reminds them there is a no-food policy in the office. Julien takes the food away, and Luc asks Emily if he can take her somewhere special for lunch on her birthday.
Luc takes Emily to his favorite cemetery, the Père Lachaise. They stop by Balzac’s grave; it is where Luc spends his birthdays. He tells Emily that to think about life is to contemplate death and that we believe our life is up here, but it is really down there, in oblivion.
Emily walks home from a trip from the store to buy ingredients for her birthday dinner. Gabriel spots her and looks at what she bought. Seeing that what Emily bought was not good enough, Gabriel tells Emily they should head to the market. Just as they are about to go home, the rain pours. They run for cover. As they do, lightning strikes. Gabriel tells Emily that it’s called ‘coup de foudre,’ which means ‘lightning strike,’ but it also means ‘love at first sight.’ Gabriel touches her face and looks her in the eyes. Before things can get any weirder, Emily tells him she needs to go.
Sylvie goes to the atelier to convince Pierre to continue with the collab with Rimowa. She brings two suitcases and tells Pierre he will be making the worst mistake of his life if he does not do it.
Julien gets a message from Pierre saying he needs to see him immediately. Julien runs.
Emily gets busy preparing food for dinner. After cooking, she goes down to check on Mindy and the venue. Camille comes with a bottle of champagne. Mindy brings it upstairs so it can get chilled. Gabriel comes with some chairs. He greets Camille and tells her she looks beautiful. Sylvie and Luc come. Luc gives Emily a book — a novel by Balzac. Sylvie tells her Pierre is doing the Rimowa collab; she talked him into it. She then gives Emily a cigarette case as her present and tells her it’s never too late to start smoking.
Camille tells Gabriel it is the longest time they have not seen each other since they met. Gabriel tells her it’s true, except for the first Christmas when she went skiing in Chamonix where there’s no reception, so he had to drive all night to see her. Camille apologizes for losing her temper and for pushing him away. Gabriel tells her he’s also sorry, and they both have things to work on. Camille agrees and tells him she doesn’t want to lose what they had. Emily and Mindy see them talking. Emily tells Mindy it is what she wanted for her birthday.
Julien arrives at the atelier and apologizes to Pierre when he sees that the luggage is there. Pierre tells him he loves the suitcases, but he thinks the hardware and the wheels look cheap. Julien tells him he’s on his way to a dinner party and will talk to Rimowa about the hardware the next morning. Pierre refuses to let him go and asks him to pretend that he’s in the airport so Pierre can see the luggage on the move.
Back at Emily’s party, Mindy tells Emily the food was delicious. Camille and Luc agree. Gabriel mouths something to Mindy, and she immediately leaves. Emily asks Camille if she’s having a good time. Camille tells her it’s the perfect night. Emily tells her it’s nice to see them together. Camille tells her she would be happy if Emily is also seeing someone, but if she wants to keep her little affair secret, it is also fine.
Mindy comes with the cake Gabriel baked and presents it to Emily — she makes a wish. Camille tells Gabriel the cake looks fantastic and rushes to get the champagne upstairs. After getting the bottle from the fridge, Camille sees the omelet pan and checks it for Gabriel’s initials. She looks visibly defeated when she sees GTC imprinted on the pan she’s holding.
Gabriel receives praise for his chocolate cake. He wipes off frosting from Emily’s face with his fingers just as Camille comes with the champagne. Luc tells everyone the champagne has arrived; they ask Emily to make a toast. Emily thanks everyone for putting up with her; she still makes mistakes from time to time. She also thanks all of them for making her time in Paris really special.
Camille also makes a toast — for Emily pretending to be her friend while having an affair with her boyfriend and for Gabriel, who fucked her fake friend. She drinks and smashes the glass to the ground. Gabriel tells her it’s not what she thinks, but Camille refuses to listen.
Emily goes after Camille. Camille asks her how long their affair was going on when she catches up to her. Emily tells her it’s not going on. Camille asks her to be honest for once and tell her if she slept with Gabriel. When Emily fails to answer, Camille walks away.
Our Thoughts
So the bomb finally exploded, but we didn’t expect it would blow up on Emily’s birthday. Everything was perfect because we thought things were already getting better between Camille and Gabriel, and Emily would be off the hook. Now, everything is not okay, and our birthday girl ended up sad — with her first birthday in Paris tainted. On the bright side, we’re so happy that Pierre is already onboard with the collaboration with Rimowa, but that he got in the way of Julien attending Emily’s party is a bummer. Julien was so excited that he even bought a gift. We certainly missed him!
