Emily in Paris Season 1 Episode 5 Recap – Faux Amis

Emily tells Mindy that Gabriel is Camille’s boyfriend. Mindy tells her French men are flirts, so Emily does not need to be bothered. She tells Emily she needs to act normal when she sees him, and she’s going to stay friends with Camille, so she can stay close to Gabriel, too, calling them ‘faux amis,’ meaning fake friend. Camille comes and sits with them. Mindy takes a photo of her and Emily for the emilyinparis IG account.

Emily gets an exclusive lunch invite as an influencer from Durée, a cosmetics brand. Excited about it, Emily tells Julien about the invite. He then tells her they don’t speak of Durée in Savoir. Durée was a former client that fired Savoir. She fails to get further information about what happened from Julien, so she tries Sylvie. She dismisses her and gives her marketing materials for Hästens Luxury Bed instead, a company with whom they are scheduled to meet the next day.

Emily attends Durée’s influencer lunch to speak with Olivia Thompson, the company’s founder. But Olivia’s assistant makes it difficult. He advises Emily to post on social media to attract Olivia’s attention. Emily eventually gets to speak with Olivia after posting a video of herself eating a strawberry from Durée’s wall display. Olivia feels Emily is the ideal brand ambassador, and Emily assures her she can help Olivia a lot. Emily gets invited to a lunch meeting with Olivia the next day.

On her way home, she sees Gabriel and Camille making their way out of the building. They invite her on their date; Emily doesn’t have the chance to decline. The three of them have fun. They go to an interactive display of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” When left alone with Gabriel, Emily tells him to forget the kiss they shared; she didn’t know he had a girlfriend when it happened. Gabriel agrees.

The next day, during the meeting with Hästens, Emily pitches the idea of staging the bed at the most Instagrammable spots in the city and inviting real people to sleep and dream on the bed.

During lunch, Emily meets with Olivia; she gets offered to be a brand ambassador for Durée. She politely declines, saying she works for Savoir, and they’d love to have Durée back onboard. Olivia declines, especially after knowing Sylvie is still there. She tells Emily to look out for herself because Sylvie won’t.

Back at the office, Sylvie tells Emily to find a way to stage a bed in The Louvre. She also confronts Emily about working for Durée for free and how this harms Savoir’s reputation. Ultimately, Sylvie asks Emily to delete her IG account. Frustrated by this, Emily turns to Mindy. The two have fun drinking while posting final stories to IG before the account gets deleted. Emily is also disappointed she can’t get a Hästens bed inside The Louvre. She meets Gabriel on her way back to her apartment, who tells her he felt something during their kiss.

The next day, Sylvie tells Emily to reactivate her account because Hästens likes her to stage the bed on the location of the last photo she posted; they want Emily to be the first to post there. Sylvie then tells her she can keep her account and be an influencer but only for the brands they represent.

After Emily gets photographed on the display bed, Camille comes up to her and asks about the bed. Emily explains it’s a marketing project she came up with after seeing Van Gogh’s exhibit the other night. Camille expresses her relief at hearing from Emily, explaining she assumed Gabriel was unpleasant to her, so she no longer wants to hang out with them. She also expresses her wish for the three of them to become friends. They take a photo in bed, which Emily shares on social media with the caption #getinbedwithus. When Gabriel sees this, he hearts it.

Our Thoughts

We’ll admit this episode has gotten us nervous because of the deleted emilyinparis account. It is, after all, the show’s namesake. Also, like Emily, we want to know what really happened between Savoir and Durée. I mean, will we ever find out? Anyway, we have seen Emily’s friendship with Camille and Gabriel get deeper, and we’re losing hope Emily and Gabriel will ever be an item. Well, if that’s the case, then maybe there is someone hotter who’ll come along, right? Come on, Emily can’t be single in Paris and not have a romantic interest! It would be such a waste.
