Ed Sheeran Quits Twitter Due To Troll Backlash, Lady Gaga Jumps In With Support

Ed Sheeran may be one of the most celebrated superstars of this generation—with his chart-topping singles, expressive albums, and songs that have become anthems in everyone’s playlist; but it doesn’t mean he’s immune to online backlash. He’s so divisive that there’s a huge disparity of people who both love and hate Sheeran.

But the weird thing about this dilemma is that Sheeran knows that he has haters. After introducing his song “Galway Girl” at the Glastonbury Festival as a song “you might not like,” a constant stream of verbal abuse on Twitter never stopped from flowing towards the singer.

Ed Sheeran On Quitting Twitter

In an interview with The Sun, Sheeran explains why he ultimately decided to leave the social media site. “I’ve actually come off Twitter completely. I can’t read it,” the 26-year-old “Shape of You” singer said. “I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things. Twitter’s a platform for that. One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it. The head-f*** for me has been trying to work out why people dislike me so much.”

Despite this, the singer says that he will remain on Instagram and will not delete his Twitter, seeing how some of his Instagram posts automatically tweets on his account. However, Sheeran won’t be posting anything on Twitter himself.

Sheeran also mentioned the Twitter war that ensued between him and Lady Gaga fans when they all thought that he was talking bull about her in an interview with Zane Lowe. “And it wasn’t anything to do with that at all. So I think Twitter gets on a massive steam roll of assuming things and then you get in the s***.”

With all the endless flak Sheeran is getting from Twitter trolls and bullies, the singer says that he’ll “get his reality checks from close friends and family.” He went on to say, “I have people like my dad who will have a conversation with me. I don’t have to have someone calling me a whatever.”

Lady Gaga Rises Up In Sheeran’s Defense

“Million Reasons” singer Lady Gaga also joined in the Twitter war, albeit defending Sheeran’s camp. In a sweet Instagram post (which you can check out below), Gaga wrote:

“What an incredible talented artist. I LOVE ED. @teddysphotos deserves all our love and respect like all humans do. I wish all people on the internet would be positive and loving and apart of creating an online community that is kind and empowering, not hateful and mean. No reason to tear down an artist simply because they are on top. Work harder to be kinder everybody. That should be your first duty to humanity.”

Sheeran’s departure from Twitter comes just after a week he caught another storm from trolls. He was accused of lip syncing while using a backing track during his set at Glastonbury, which was actually well-received that time. The singer responded by saying that he was using a loop pedal—which allows him to record his vocals and guitar riffs on the spot—helping him create a looped accompaniment when he performs on stage.
