It’s no mystery that Black Adam was a huge passion project for Dwayne Johnson, and he was ready to keep bringing the character back after the film premiered back in October. With news of James Gunn rebooting the entire DCEU though, it looks like Johnson has to hang his Adam cape early as well.
In an official post on his Twitter, Johnson confirms his Black Adam will be taking a bow, and he wishes the DC reboot good luck. Here’s the post:

I guess it’s interesting that Johnson should say the film isn’t in the ‘first chapter of storytelling’ for DC. So does that mean that there is another ‘phase’ where Black Adam could return?
With Johnson said to have been adamant about his demands and even bullied WB into letting Henry Cavill appear in his movie, it’s kind of interesting to see him backing down and showing support for James Gunn. It definitely sounds like he knows something that hasn’t been revealed in public yet; either that, or the Rock is just acting as professional as he can after a franchise he’s tried so hard to launch has just gotten shut down.
For now, I think fans are just going through the stages of grief. Watching the whole #RestoreTheSnyderVerse struggle online has been a unique experience, but with Gunn officially cutting the life support on the franchise, I think there is a great opportunity to just redo the whole thing without so much of the behind-the-scenes mess.
Let’s just hope WB doesn’t meddle too much with the creative decisions this time.
