'Dungeons & Dragons' Taps 'Game Night' Directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley

The dice have been rolled for the upcoming movie adaptation of the famous tabletop game, Dungeons & DragonsSpider-Man: Homecoming scribes and Game Night director duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are currently in negotiations to helm the film for Paramount Pictures and Hasbro’s AllSpark Pictures banner (via Deadline). Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis are attached to produce.

Dungeons & Dragons is a popular board game that first hit the shelves in 1974 and went on to be a massive hit (not to mention a big part of ’80s pop culture). The game is overseen by a Dungeon Master, the person responsible for the game’s narrative as the players create their own characters to fight and be a part of the game. Development for the movie version of the game has been going for years, with property disputes over the franchise being tossed around to different studios. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema tried their luck in developing the film, with Robot Chicken‘s Chris McKay previously in the director’s chair. The project never came to fruition after the dismal performance of Universal’s adaptation of Warcraft, another popular computer game. Now, it looks like Paramount is stepping up to bring Dungeons & Dragons to life.

Goldstein and Daley were the brains and eye behind Warner Bros.’ Game Night, a comedy flick about a group of couples who embark on a night of role-playing games that turn out to be a kidnapping in the making. And since the game they wanted to play had a criminal element to it, the players are now left clueless about what’s real or not. The movie starred Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams. The directors were also previously attached to DC’s solo Flash movie, but later departed the project due to creative issues with Warner Bros. and the star himself, Ezra Miller.

Should the deal push through, Goldstein and Daley will be working on the Dungeons & Dragons draft written by Michael Gilio.
