Donald Glover Says Lando Calrissian More Complicated Than Han Solo

Billy Dee Williams will always be the face of Lando Calrissian. However, for the upcoming Han Solo “Star Wars” spin-off film, Donald Glover will be stepping in to play the young Lando. With this huge role at hand, Glover thinks that he is even more complicated than Han himself.

Since his role in “Atlanta,” Glover went on to become more than a recognizable personality in Hollywood. “Atlanta” earned a positive critical reception and won multiple awards as well. Glover is also slated to appear in next month’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and will be voicing Simba in “The Lion King’s” live-action remake. He’s also producing his own “Deadpool Animated Series” sometime soon.

Among Glover’s exclusively-packed production schedule, his biggest role to date is that of Lando Calrissian. Now officially part of the “Star Wars” universe, he has previously stated that it’s impossible to say no to such an iconic character.

In an interview with Deadline, Glover talked about his career and how much he loves working on the Han Solo spin-off. He says that he is currently focused in being the best Lando that he can be and it looks like things are working out pretty well.

“This is probably one of my favorite experiences ever. For working under, like, a huge conglomerate, it’s actually been quite an enjoyable, artistic thing. I get to play him in a way that I think is honest and true and cool. And it’s great ’cause I didn’t have to write anything, I’m focused strictly on being this guy. And I really respect him and I respect the actor who played him before. I’ve learned a lot about this character, so it’s actually been really fulfilling and nice to just turn off everything else and focus on just being someone. So it’s been cool.”

A More Complicated Lando in Han Solo

Even though Glover isn’t experiencing as much pressure as Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo) has to imitate one of the key characters in the “Star Wars” saga, Lando Calrissian is still a major fan-favorite. Incidentally, Lando is Glover’s favorite character as he grew up watching “Star Wars.”

He went on to describe how complicated Lando’s character is. “I feel like people like him ’cause he has a lot of style, but also he’s a complicated character in this world. I think even Han isn’t as complicated as Lando is. From the first time you meet him, you don’t know whether to trust him or not, and you’re constantly not knowing whether to trust him. I like that about him.”

This is of course a movie focused on Han Solo, but Lando is expected to have a massive role , giving Glover more time to play the character. Since we all have been through that phase of despising Lando in “Empire Strikes Back,” it would be very interesting how Glover will be showing this side of Lando in the Han Solo movie.

The as-yet to be titled Han Solo “Star Wars” Anthology film is slated for a May 25, 2018 release date.
