Last month saw author Rick Riordan officially announce the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series for Disney+. We haven’t gotten any significant updates since then, but Riordan has revealed when cameras will start rolling for the series.
In his new blog post, Riordan reveals that the series will start shooting on June 1. He doesn’t give us any photos or details about the cast, but the blog does have him gushing about the sets being built for the series. He explains:
We explored the Percy production offices, where prep work is underway for the show. We met our costume designer Tish Monaghan, who was reading through the illustrated Lightning Thief to brainstorm for costume ideas (good move!) and Dan Hennah, our production designer, whose team is busy creating the visual world in which Percy will travel. His office walls are covered with beautiful artwork of places you would recognize from The Lightning Thief: Mount Olympus, the Underworld, Aunty Em’s, Sally Jackson’s apartment, and many more, all done in a way that is true to the story, but also fresh and exciting.
Riordan also takes a moment to mention that Hennah is from New Zealand, and that he has worked with Peter Jackson on the Lord of the Rings movies so he ‘knows a few things about bringing magical worlds to life.’
With a June start for Percy Jackson, we might get our first look at the series near the end of the year. After the way 20th Century Studios handled the source material, it looks like Riordan is making himself more involved when it comes to the creative process of the show; after all, if this series is ‘done right’, Disney could have another gigantic IP on their hands—not unlike Star Wars or Harry Potter.
No release date has been set for Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
