Joe and Anthony Russo may be taking a break from Marvel after Avengers: Endgame, but they’re still under th Disnet umbrella wuth their upcoming adaptation of Hercules. We don’t have a look at the movie yet, but the Russos have shared some more details about the Greek musical.
Talking to Variety, the Russos explain their experimental approach with Hercules—much like original with its Gospel-inspired music and celebrity origin story. Joe Russo explains:
“There are questions about how you translate it as a musical… Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical.”
I don’t really know what they mean when they say that audiences are ‘trained by TikTok’, but I guess the approach they want to do with the mythological world of Ancient Greece is they want to run it through a modern filter, just like the animated movie did. With Hercules essentially going through a rise to fame, I think TikTok can inform how celebrities are viewed and how they are presented to the public.
Then again, that’s just my guess.
As a fan of Guy Ritchie, I was honestly disappointed by the way Aladdin came out, but with the Russos onboard, maybe we could be looking at a more inspired, creator-driven project. Russo did add, “Guy is perfect for it because he has penchant for experimentation.”
We’ll just have to wait and see.
No release date has been set for the live-action adaptation of Hercules.
