Marvel gave fans quite the treat at the Superbowl LIV with teasers from the studio’s most-anticipated series of the year with Disney+. And now, Disney has taken it a step further by revealing the premiere months of the series. During the company’s first-quarter earning’s call, Disney CEO Robert Iger confirmed that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will premiere in August. WandaVision will follow a few months after that in December.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is Marvel’s first big series with Disney+. It stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan who are reprising their roles as Sam Wilson aka Falcon and Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier. The miniseries will follow Sam as he takes on the mantle of Captain America. And according to Screen Rant, this will not be met without opposition. In last year’s D23 expo, Kevin Feige revealed that John Walker played by Wyatt Russell will be part of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In the comics, he also took on Captain America’s mantle for some time. And it seems that he’s the U.S. government’s pick to be the next Captain.
Recently, Page Six posted set photos of Russell from Marvel’s production. On one of them, Russell is in full military uniform. And in the other, he’s in a redesigned Captain America costume. He also has the shield with him although it remains unclear if it’s Steve Rogers’ shield or a duplicate the government made.
The Handmaid’s Tale‘s director Kari Skogland will be directing the six-episode miniseries while Malcolm Spellman will be writing. Emily VanCamp and Daniel Bruhl are also joining the team to reprise their roles as Sharon Carter and Helmut Zemo respectively.
WandaVision, on the other hand, focuses squarely on Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision’s (Paul Bettany) relationship. Although, it is arguably the most puzzling series Marvel has on the list. The Super Bowl teaser revealed a classic sitcom-style show where Wanda and Vision seem to be living in domestic bliss. It even features Scarlet Witch in her comic book trademark suit. However, even the official synopsis that Disney released afterward didn’t give much away. It reads:
“Marvel Studios’ “WandaVision” blends the style of classic sitcoms with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany)—two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.”
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision will both tie in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The latter also links up with the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
