Disney Reveals How Quaritch Gets His Own Avatar in the Way of Water

Stephen Lang’s Quaritch was one of the main villains in James Cameron’s Avatar, and while the character was killed by the end of the movie, Lang still finds himself in the sequel The Way of Water. What’s interesting is, Quaritch is going to be piloting his own avatar, and while the trailers don’t reveal why, Disney has dropped down the details thanks to a press release.

According to Disney (via The Direct), the original Quaritch is dead, and the one we see Lang play in the Way of Water is an avatar grown out of his DNA and given his memories. In fact, Quaritch is only one of several soldiers that have been resurrected called recombinants (recoms); so that means that there’s a team of soldiers that fight for the humans that are just as sturdy as the Na’vi on Pandora, and Quaritch is leading them.

With Quaritch’s lack of empathy being integral to his character in the first movie, it’s going to be interesting to see just how his character plays out in the sequel. Will he be put through the emotional ringer that Jake was when he found himself in a new body? Or will we see a dark mirror of Jake if he just kept rejecting the world of Pandora and followed orders like a good soldier?

I honestly thought the first movie was solid enough, but I wonder where James Cameron wants to go with the sequel since he’s been dubbed the “King of Sequels” from Aliens to Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Avatar: The Way of Water is set to come out Dec. 16.
