The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is looking brighter than Cyclops’ beams. It’s confirmed that Marvel Studios Head Honcho Kevin Feige will take over the entire X-Men franchise after the Disney-Fox merger finalizes sometime soon. It’s been MCU fans’ longtime dream to see the X-Men, Avengers, and The Fantastic Four together in the big screen, but the rights to these characters were divided between Disney and Fox. But now that the merger will push through, it’s finally going to happen.
Disney CEO Bob Iger sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about the future of the company and its new assets. When asked about how Marvel is going to absorb the X-Men franchise and if Feige is stepping in to take the reins, Iger gave a hopeful, clean-cut statement.
“I think it only makes sense. I want to be careful here because of what’s been communicated to the Fox folks, but I think they know,” Iger said. “It only makes sense for Marvel to be supervised by one entity. There shouldn’t be two Marvels.”
However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the X-Men will be a part of the current MCU continuity. In the comics, the Avengers and the X-Men have always worked together to battle threats and sometimes each other. But seeing how the MCU currently thrives with its own roster of superheroes, it could be a bit awkward to suddenly introduce the X-Men with the past films not even acknowledging their existence.
Maybe a reboot is in the horizon, but until Feige speaks up about his plans officially, it’s all unclear for now.
When asked about Deadpool joining the Avengers, Iger said, “Kevin’s got a lot of ideas. I’m not suggesting that’s one of them. But who knows?”
