A lot of fans were holding their breath for the release of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, but the movie managed to be successful enough that a sequel had already gotten greenlit.
Dune: Part Two is set to start shooting later this year, and Villeneuve gives us a small update. He tells Deadline, “It’s going to be another beautiful journey in the desert again… It’s the journey where Paul Atreides and his mother, Lady Jessica, make contact with the Fremen culture and meet with the Fremen. It’s Paul’s journey against the enemy.”
While the first movie was admittedly kind of slow (which is kind of Villeneuve’s thing), he does promise that this sequel will ‘be more cinematic.’ We don’t know what that means exactly, but it’s likely we’re going to be getting more spectacle with the sandworms and maybe some space fights.
Besides the upcoming sequel, the world of Dune is also getting a spinoff on HBO Max called Dune: The Sisterhood. While fans expect Villeneuve to have a hand in the series, he does say, “We’ll see what happens… The TV series is a work in progress, it’s moving forward.”
With the lore of Dune being so expansive, it would make sense to make a series spinoff. After all, if The Batman can have two spinoffs conceived for it, why not a world like Dune which has a layout for an entire universe?
Dune: Part Two is set to come out on Oct. 20, 2023.
