Healing
Rengoku is one of the last of the Hashira to depart from the meeting. Shinobu asks her where he’s headed. He’s going for an incident where many of their comrades and civilians have been killed–probably by an Upper Moon demon.
He asks him what Shinobu plans for Tanjiro if she’s not going to take him in as successor. She tells him not to worry about it.
Back at the estate, Zenitsu is whining again. He doesn’t want to drink his bitter medicine. Tanjiro tries to drink one, and it goes down easily. Zenitsu is jealous
Murata checks in on them. He’s wondering about Inosuke, who’s unusually quiet. Tanjiro says they’ll have to leave him be.
Murata is trembling because he’s asked to report the Natagumo Mountain incident. Some of them are being called for disobedience. He says the Hashira are scary when Shinobu comes in behind him.
Rehabilitation Training
He asks Tanjiro how he’s feeling. She’s come for their rehabilitation training. She takes Inosuke and Tanjiro away while Zenitsu recovers his limbs.
That night, Inosuke and Tanjiro come back to their beds with a worn-out look. They directly go to sleep and won’t even speak. Zenitsu is terrified as he’ll be joining them tomorrow.
The three of them endure a grueling massage from the three assistants in the training hall. Next is the reflex training, where they’ll have to face Kanao in a game. There are cups laid out on a table in front of them; they’ll have to prevent the opponent from picking up a cup and throwing it to their face.
The next is the full-body training, where they’ll be playing tag. Zenitsu asks the other boys for a meeting, and he scolds them for hanging out with cute girls while he waits on his bed. He can’t comprehend why the two feel so down.
Zenitsu happily goes through the massage and wins against Aoi, but none of them can beat Kanao. For five consecutive days, they all lost to her until Zenitsu and Inosuke stopped showing up for training.
Total Concentration
Tanjiro ponders on how he can beat her. Her eyes and scent are different. The three small girls approach him and tell him to use Total Concentration Breathing all the time – in the morning, afternoon, evening, and even when sleeping.
Tanjiro can’t believe it’s possible, but they say it makes all the difference. He thinks that would be too tiring, but they tell him all of the Hashiras and Kanao can do it. Tanjiro resolves to try it.
The next day Tanjiro trains alone while the others mope. Outside he attempts Total Concentration, but he can’t do it, and his body hurts.
He goes back to square one and makes progress daily. The three girls give him some snacks and tell him that Kanao was able to blow on a gourd until it broke. He can’t believe it. The largest gourd is as big as the girls.
Tanjiro keeps training alone inside the Butterfly estate while the two others are moping. Fifteen days pass, and he feels much stronger.
Shinobu appears beside him and tells him he has a sincere heart. Tanjiro asks why she brought them here, and she reveals she’d like to pass her dream on to him. A dream for humans and demons to coexist.
Tanjiro can smell anger on her; since her sister lost her life to a demon, it’s been building inside her. Most of the Hashira feel the same. Tanjiro reminds Shinobu of her sister, as she is sympathetic to demons. But she’s gotten tired, as demons are full of deception and kill with disregard. She asks Tanjiro to do her best to protect Nezuko and wants him to succeed.
Our Thoughts
This is a fun and refreshing episode to relax us after what happened at Nagatumo. It’s a training arc that builds more characters and makes the world feel much larger. I rate this a 3.5/5
