DC's Upcoming 'Shazam!' Movie Casts 'IT's' Jack Dylan Grazer

The upcoming “Shazam!” movie from DC looks to be more than a promising superhero film that’s separate from the DC Extended Universe. Following the recent casting announcements made for the movie, a new addition came into the fold—and this time, he’s from the scary sewers of Derry, Maine. “IT’s” Jack Dylan Grazer, known for playing Eddie Kaspbrak in Andy Muschietti’s box-office horror flick, will play Billy Batson’s best friend, alongside Asher Angel as Billy and Zachary Levi as the superhero himself.
As confirmed by Deadline, Grazer will play the role of Freddy Freeman, Billy’s best friend and the only person who knows about his lighting-changing abilities. Billy, on the other hand, is the chosen alter-ego for Shazam. Grazer also joins Mark Strong, who currently attached to play the villain Dr. Sivana. Given Grazer’s impressive acting chops—not to mention his motor mouth abilities—makes him the perfect fit to play Freddy.
In the comics, Freddy is a part of the Marvel family as Captain Marvel, Jr. He is the sidekick to Captain Marvel, or in this case, “Shazam!” It’s unclear if Grazer will also don the superhero identity in the movie, but as far as we know, he’s only attached to play Batson’s best friend.
The upcoming superhero flick will be directed by “Lights Out’s” David F. Sandberg, with a script penned by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. The movie is believed to be separate from the DCEU, with Levi confirming a more lighter tone.
“Shazam!” is slated for release on April 5, 2019.
