Dave Bautista had been trying his best to shake off his wrestling persona to pursue acting, and it was Guardians of the Galaxy that gave him his big break. After years of playing the character across film and TV though, Bautista says that he’s definitely done after the next Guardians movie.
In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Bautista explains:
“This is my seventh film as Drax. And my third ‘Guardians’ [movie]. It was like our trilogy. That’s kind of what we all signed up for, to do a trilogy. And I think this will be the last version of our ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’”
1By last version of our Guardians, this means that the Guardians could still exist down the line, but it will no longer be the team of Mantis, Drax, Quill, Rocket, Gamora, and Nebula. Bautista continues:
“We all had those perfect character arcs and such a storybook ending… I constantly relate it to the way I ended my wrestling career. I ended it on a storybook note. And I would never go back and tarnish that. And it’s the same with this.”
“With Drax, I just got to end the perfect way… And I would never sign up for another job as Drax just to get a paycheck. I would tarnish that [perfect ending], and I won’t do it.”
We don’t know exactly how Drax’s arc is meant to end, but a rumor has come out that Drax is supposed to discover that his daughter is still alive. With Drax mentioning his family in every Guardians film, it’s very possible that the final movie will have him finally confronting the ‘ghost’ of his family
Personally, I think an arc where Drax decides to stay with his daughter is better than having to watch him die. But if that is the case, I think it would be fitting for Drax to sacrifice himself for his new family.
For now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to come out on
