It’s been almost 30 years since Kevin Smith made Clerks and became a cult icon, and after a sequel and multiple delays, he’s finally going to release Clerks III. The film is set to hit theaters this September, and we have a new trailer featuring the return of Dante and Randal.

Here’s the official synopsis:
Following a massive heart attack, Randal enlists his friends and fellow clerks Dante, Elias, Jay, and Silent Bob to make a movie immortalizing his life at the convenience store that started it all. “Clerks III” stars Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Trevor Fehrman, Austin Zajur, Jason Mewes, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Rosario Dawson, and Kevin Smith.
Just in case you haven’t been following the news, the story is actually surprisingly meta. Randal getting a heart attack draws experience from Smith himself, who had suffered a major heart attack back in 2018. He has since gotten back to making movies like with the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, but Clerks is really the film that got critical praise for Smith.
I am interested to see Smith going meta, what with Randal essentially doing what Smith did back in the 90s when he made Clerks. While the move does feel a bit self –referential, I think that the story behind the making of Clerks is almost as a good as the film itself, and I want to watch Smith tell it through his own lens.
Catch Clerks III when it hits theaters on Sept. 13.
