The Matrix Resurrections wasn’t the franchise rejuvenation that fans were hoping for, but director Danny Boyle does have a unique take on the world in the form of a dance musical.
According to Variety, Free Your Mind will be a direct dance adaptation of the original Matrix that came out in 1999, and the project is set to debut at Factory International sometime this month. The logline reads:
“Combining the hip-hop choreography of hundreds of dancers with the latest immersive design, ‘Free Your Mind’ will take audiences on a thrilling journey through ‘The Matrix’ and into a new realm of possibilities…”
… This eye-opening production will stretch across the building’s ultra-flexible spaces, responding to them and harnessing the collective energy of the moment.”
I’ll admit, The Matrix is the last property I would expect to get a dance musical, but if you really think about it, there is a lot of room for techno music and dancing in the films. Not to mention, you have all the characters clad in flowing black leather, which I’m sure is a look that is meant to go with dance movements.
Hopefully we get some kind of trailer before release, because I am curious to see what kind of visuals Boyle has in store for the project. I mean, imagine he trippy look of Trainspotting fused with the world of The Matrix. It may not need multi-million-dollar CG, but I’m sure it will be a one-of-a-kind experience.
