The year started off with news that Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) was going to be playing Weird Al Yankovic in a biopic, and while production has been going on smoothly, we now have our first teaser look at the film.
Watch this:
Before you expect the film to be grounded like other recent music biopics like Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody, Weird has been dubbed as a pseudo-biopic, in that a lot of the movie is based on real-life, but there will be some creative freedom when it comes to the storytelling.
I’ll admit, I was expecting Radcliffe to act all goofy like Weird Al does in a lot of his videos, but it looks like he’s playing the film completely straight. Then again, this movie is based on the Funny or Die skit where they try to sell Weird Al’s biopic as a serious drama like Walk the Line or Ray.
Though Radcliffe did start out in a fairly serious franchise, he has since been taking on a lot of weird and experimental roles, like in Swiss Army Man or Guns Akimbo. Radcliffe did have this to say about playing Weird Al:
“Wearing the Hawaiian shirt is a huge responsibility that I don’t take lightly… I’m honored to finally share with the world the absolutely 100% unassailably true story of Weird Al’s depraved and scandalous life.”
