Dan Harmon: Donald Glover NEEDS to be in the Community Movie

When the Community movie was first announced, fans immediately asked the question of which cast members would be coming back—especially since a lot of those core cast members had left the series before it ended.
While it looks like Chevy Chase isn’t being courted for a return, Community creator Dan Harmon emphasizes that the film can only work with Donald Glover onboard. During a panel a NYCC (via IndieWire), Harmon confirms:
“I think that Donald is coming, based on word of mouth, but it’s just the deal isn’t official or wasn’t official. It would be difficult to really commit to doing this thing without Donald… So I believe he is coming back. I think if there’s names missing from a list, it’s because the names that are on the list, their deals are agreed upon enough that it’s OK to say they are on the list, and anybody that’s not on a list, it’s just not the case yet. So there is nothing official about anybody being out.”
If you’ve watched the show, you’ll know that Glover’s Troy was essential to the Community ensemble, especially with the comedic powerhouse that was Troy and Abed. Glover eventually left the show to pursue his rap career as Childish Gambino; plus he also managed to create his own successful shows, like FX’s Atlanta.
There’s also something there about playing a young Lando Calrissian in a Star Wars movie.
Though Glover does represent a very different brand post-Community, I am hoping that he makes the time to return, even for just one film.
As of now, no release date has been set for the Community movie, but it is expected to come out on Peacock sometime soon.
