With the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, you can bet that Sony is going to go all-in with their Spider-Verse, and one character that fans never thought would get her own solo film is Madame Web. As it turns out, Sony may have found someone to play Spider-Man’s version of Professor X.
Deadline reports that Dakota Johnson (50 Shades of Grey) is currently in talks to play the lead in a Madame Web film. SJ Clarkson (Jessica Jones, The Defenders) is said to be on board as director, with a script coming from Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama.
In the comics, Cassandra Webb was a mutant with the power of clairvoyance and precognition. Besides being blind, she also suffered a medical condition that required her to be connected permanently to a life support system that looked like a giant web. She had teamed up with Spider-Man in the comics, and is also the mentor of the third Spider-Woman Matte Franklin; Webb is also the grandmother of the fourth Spider-Woman, Charlotte Witter.
With Madame Web being an old woman/mentor character in the comics, I would imagine that Johnson could be playing her successor. With so many superhero movies now, you would think that the origin story would be played out by this point. Then again, Madame Web is kind of an unconventional character, so maybe there’s room for an unconventional story for her.
Though Spider-Man: No Way Home was a success, the solo Sony films like Venom are still a far cry when it comes to quality. Let’s just hope this Madame Web movie is closer to a film like Into the Spider-Verse than Let There be Carnage.
No release date has been set for the Madame Web film, but you can catch Spider-Man: No Way Home now in theaters.
