Sequel era fans rejoice!
After The Rise of Skywalker had Lucasfilm and Disney leaving heavily on stories set during the Prequel and Original Trilogy eras of Star Wars with shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Mandalorian, it looks like the universe is once again going to be moving forward.
As revealed at Star Wars Celebration last weekend (via Polygon), Star Wars is going to be returning to the Sequel era again, and Daisy Ridley will be reprising her role as Rey Skywalker. We don’t have much specifics about the plot yet, but it’s said that it will deal with Rey attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order—just like Luke did.
This story was originally written by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson before they quit the project a few weeks ago. Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight will be taking over script duties, but the director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was the original choice to helm since the beginning.
We don’t know who else from the Sequel Era could be returning, but it would be great if we could get John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Kelly Marie Tran to return. After Tran was kind of sidelined in TROS, I just want to see her get the spotlight like what was originally intended, before her role was reduced thanks to (racist) fan backlash. As for Boyega, he was supposed to have a ‘revolutionary’ arc and lead stormtroopers to revolt, but we never got that in Episode IX.
We don’t know who the antagonists are going to be for this next film, but I’m hoping that Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm know what they’re doing after the fiasco that was Rise of Skywalker. Nostalgia can be fun, but it definitely shouldn’t get in the way of telling a meaningful, timeless story.
No release date has been set for this next Star Wars movie.
