The CW Sets New 'Arrow' Spinoff Starring Katie Cassidy, Katherine McNamara, & Juliana Harkavy

The CW’s Arrow might be coming to a close, but it’s not quite done with its other characters just yet. The network just announced a new spinoff that sees Katie Cassidy, Juliana Harkavy, and Katherine McNamara back as Black Canaries Laurel Lance, Dinah Drake, and Mia Smoak respectively.

According to Deadline, CW head honcho Mike Pedowitz teased the Arrow spinoff at the Television Critics’ Association in August. Now, it seems that the studio is intent on developing the show to join the Arrowverse post-Oliver Queen.

The spinoff has no title as of yet, but it will be a combined project of Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. It’s described as “a backdoor pilot that will air as an episode from the upcoming eighth and final season of Arrow.” Beth Schwartz, Marc Guggenheim, Jill Blankenship, and Oscar Balderrama will be penning the pilot.

The show will focus on Mia Smoak, Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak’s daughter, as one of the members of the new Team Arrow. Mia will take over her father’s mantle as the Green Arrow, with Dinah and Laurel joining her as they watch over Star City. It’s a promising show, to say the least, but one couldn’t help but liken it to the upcoming Disney+ show, Hawkeye, that follows the story of Clint Barton’s daughter Kate Bishop as she also dons the Hawkeye suit.

Pedowitz previously teased a new Arrowverse back in August, stressing that this new DC series will be set in the Arrow continuity. Fans tried to theorize about who the next CW superhero could be (from John Stewart to Blue Beetle), but it turns out that it would be coming directly from Arrow’s set of characters after all.

“The fact that seven years ago, we introduced Arrow, who would have thought it would have spawned six shows, a whole universe that they managed to create. It’s quite a remarkable feat,” Pedowitz said at TCA. “We believe these franchises, this universe will continue for many years, so it’s important to ensure that you have characters that will keep the fans coming back. How that universe plays out, time will tell.”

Arrow Season 8 premieres Tuesday, October 15th, at 9/8c on The CW.
