Despite being the titular “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” on the show, Rebecca’s (Rachel Bloom) storyline isn’t the main focus for this week. Season 3, episode 7 titled “Getting Over Jeff,” we get to know more about Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin) as she returns to her hometown to take care of her father. But plans of aiding her father were interrupted when she bumps into her ex-boyfriend Jeff—because nothing gets your nostalgia going than meeting your very first sexual experience. Meanwhile, Daryl and White Josh are tricked by a nine-year-old in doing something they’re too afraid to do.
Rebecca and Paula’s Buffalo Adventure Trip
After being told by her doctor to go out in the world and break out of the “therapy bubble,” Rebecca joins Paula’s trip back to her hometown. Rebecca is thrilled at the idea of becoming more adventurous while Paula dreads seeing her father again. Sure, he’s hurt, but he could be a real jerk towards her. She also needs something to do and someone to take care of, especially when her husband and the kids are doing their own thing without her. She cannot sit down and watch “Outlander” all day.
The moment they make it to Paula’s Buffalo home, she was greeted by her drunk father with a slew of insults. As playful as they sound, it’s annoying to Paula. But Rebecca finds his bigotry ironic and hilarious. Paula leaves her best friend and father alone to bond while doing groceries. There, she sees her ex-boyfriend Jeff.
Donna Lynne Champlin has this fantastic voice and a lot of ridiculously brilliant music numbers but “Very First Penis” takes the cake. We see her vocal and comedic chops shine this week. The lyrics and her performance truly capture the nostalgia of one’s first sexual experience. After singing her feelings out, Jeff walks over to Paula and giving her his number if she wants to help to fix up his Camaro.
Meanwhile, Rebecca is so entertained by Paula’s father. For her, this is a step out of her therapy bubble. Rebecca and Paula’s dad share a few drinks and lots of laughs, all leading to a whimsical tune about her best friend’s father. But in some way, he does help Rebecca step into reality like her doctor advised her to do.
‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ Tells us to face the breakup
We last left Daryll (Pete Gardner) and White Josh (David Hull) contemplating the next step into their relationship. Daryll wants to have a second child but White Josh isn’t on board with the idea. Madison, Daryll’s nine-year-old daughter, plays the voice of reason. She tells her father that since Daryll and White Josh do not have the same views on children, they should break it off—rip off the band-aid so to speak. Daryll agrees with Madison. But when it came time to talk about it with White Josh, he hesitated.
Since the two grown men cannot face their issues themselves, Madison decides to play a reverse parent trap—which is getting two parental figures to break up. She’s only helping them talk about it and not let them ignore the issue. She tricks her father and his boyfriend to coming to Homebase for a softball party with the parents. But to their surprise, it was a baby shower. The couple finally talked and realized they have to end the relationship. A few hours of saying goodbye later, the two still seem keen on staying.
Thankfully, Hector gives them an excuse to stay a little longer. The three friends watched Josh Chan (Vincent Rodriguez) show off his cocktail making skills. Like the others on the show, he is trying to find his place and grow as a person. He takes a bartending job to feel like a man. But after getting a staph infection and ruining a chance on a date, Heather reminds Josh he is a man but needs to start acting like a grown-up, not just a man.
The Relationship Bubble
Paula was caught in a lie when she told Rebecca she’s going to Mass with her old friend Sheila Girl face. But after nine hours, Rebecca realized Paula gave her a fake name. When Paula’s dad asked who she’s meeting with, all the details Rebecca could offer was that they both like fixing up cars. But her dad knew who she was referring to. Back in a garage with Paula and Jeff, the two danced and almost kissed. But Paula realized she has a family and a husband who loves her. She steps away, and then Rebecca and Paula’s father comes barging in with a gun. Like any first love, Paula and Jeff’s ended tragically. Jeff broke up with Paula at a parking lot, leaving her brokenhearted. Despite his drunken insults towards his daughter, he didn’t like seeing his little girl go through heartache. Before leaving, Rebecca tells Paula’s father that Paula is first in her Law class. Impressed with his daughter, he finally gives her a compliment she’s been waiting for a long time.
They return to the house where Paula reassures Rebecca nothing happened. Paula realized her whole life she has been treating her husband Scott like a consolation prize. The moment she comes home she tells Scott she would always choose him, especially when their celebrity picks turn her down. Meanwhile, Rebecca decides to face the sexual tension between her Nathaniel finally. She was reluctant at first because she felt like she’d be jumping back into a pattern. She doesn’t want to be the “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” anymore. But after a steamy sexting session and her doctor’s advice to face reality, Rebecca shows up at Nathaniel’s door. She enthusiastically recaps everything that happened to her in the past few days to her doctor. He tells Rebecca he is proud of her and gives her a scratch and sniff sticker as a reward.
The road to recovery isn’t as bad after all.
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” returns with the third season winter premiere on Friday, January 5, 2018, with “Nathaniel Needs My Help” at 8/7c on The CW.
