After going through a soft box office opening this weekend, Warner Bros’ “Justice League” continues to dip down significantly following the release of Disney’s “Coco.” It’s been a downhill battle for the DC Extended Universe as the well-received and audience hit superhero movie (which failed to fare well with critics) continues to get bad press. “Coco,” on the other hand, is hoping to be a Thanksgiving weekend tentpole movie.
During the animated movie’s opening, it delivered an estimated $13.2 million on Wednesday, not to mention the $2.3 million earnings it got during Tuesday’s preview. Of course, this is nothing against the $93,842,239 opening weekend for “Justice League.” However, with a film as big as “Justice League,” one would expect it to dominate the box office for at least a week. But due to the recent criticisms that the film has been enduring, it’s an understandable fate for Zack Snyder’s latest superhero film.
Meanwhile, “Coco” is adding to Disney’s legacy of topping the holiday box office. This achievement just shows how Disney treats every holiday of utmost importance for most of their animated films. The studio currently holds the record for having nine of the top then three-day and five-day opening weekend records, according to Box Office Mojo. “Coco” has also become the single most massive release in Mexico, and is looking to be a domestic hit this coming weekend.
That being said, it looks like “Justice League” will off to the second spot this weekend. If “Coco” performs well these coming days, the superhero team-up movie is most likely to fall off the charts—a short-lived box office lifespan for the DCEU’s latest effort.
