Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña Stars in First Trailer for DC’s Blue Beetle

The Flash is set to reset the DC continuity, and Blue Beetle starring Xolo Mariduena would be the first film to take place in this new timeline. Just in, we have a new trailer for the film, and it looks like a story about a blue, alien Iron Man.

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

Seeing that Marideuna is this generation’s version of the Karate Kid thanks to Cobra Kai, it’s going to be interesting to see him take on a superhero franchise. The film was originally supposed to release on HBO Max, but it was upgraded to get a theatrical release—too bad we can’t say the same for Batgirl.

Admittedly, the underperformance of Shazam! 2 in the box office is considered to be a marker of superhero fatigue in the box office, but maybe if The Flash is able to deliver, DC will be able to generate enough hype for the release of Beetle; fingers crossed.

Blue Beetle is set to hit theaters on Aug. 18.
