Everyone has been waiting for Chris Pine to make his return to Star Trek, but he’s also attached to an upcoming movie adaptation of the popular RPG game, Dungeons & Dragons. While we don’t have an official look at the movie yet, Pine does talk about how they’re going to approach the upcoming film.
Talking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Pine confirms that the film’s tone is, “Game of Thrones meets Princess Bride with a dash of Holy Grail, and a good dose of Goonies.” While Pine can’t share anything without breaking any contracts, he does tease his role, “I’m the world’s best and worst party planner.”
From that, we can surmise that he’s either the Dungeon Master or maybe the owner of the house where the game will be played—what are the odds that he could be playing the villain as well?
For now, Dungeons & Dragons has Game Night directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein at the helm. Joining Pine in the cast are Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Rege-Jean Page, and Sophia Lillis.
Since the movie has Goldstein and Daley at the helm, I’m thinking they’re going to take a comedic route when it comes to the adaptation. Though there is an established lore with the world of D&D, I think it would be great if we actually got a film that highlights on the players taking the role of characters in the game, and having fun with it. At best, it should encourage newcomers to actually try D&D out for the first time if they haven’t before watching the film.
Dungeons & Dragons is set to release on March 3, 2023.
