Disney may be preparing for their live-action take on Pinocchio, but Guillermo del Toro is teaming up with Netflix for a more grim take on the classic tale. The movie is set to come out later this year, and we have a batch of new stills for the film thanks to Vanity Fair.
First look at Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion animated ‘PINOCCHIO’ film.
The film stars Gregory Mann, Finn Wolfhard, Ewan McGregor, Ron Perlman, David Bradley, Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett.

Though Disney’s version is the best-known one, del Toro is going to be putting his own special twist on the story, saying that he wants to change the original tale’s themes about being ‘obedient and behaved.’ Del Toro explains:
“It’s counter to the book, because the book is seeking the domestication of the child’s spirit in a strange way… It’s a book full of great invention, but it’s also in favor of obeying your parents and being ‘a good boy’ and all that. This [movie] is about finding yourself, and finding your way in the world—not just obeying the commandments that are given to you, but figuring out when they are okay or not.”
While the original story did have talking animals, Del Toro also explained how he wanted to make the film more grounded, in that only Pinocchio and the talking cricket are the magical elements of the story. Characters like the fox, the cat, and even the location Pleasure Island won’t be in the film, but it does trade that out for some more relative themes on what it means to be human and being not lying to oneself—intriguing since one of Pinocchio’s most notable traits is that his nose grows when he lies.
This film is shaping up to be a very interesting take on the character, and I can’t wait to get the first trailer. Catch Pinocchio when it hits Netflix later this December
