Before we got Men in Black: International with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, word was going around that a Men in Black/21 Jump Street crossover was happening with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Plans eventually fell through, but Tatum is still confident that the movie could be done.
Talking to Collider, Tatum was asked about the “MIB 23” to which he replied:
“You’re preaching to the choir, man. I still think it could work, I really do. And if Sony would ever really, like, I think do the hard work and figure out the producer problems that are inherent with that film, I think we can still do it. But right now, I don’t know why, they’re just not motivated to do it. It’s a big overhead on that movie, so.”
When it comes to ‘producer problems’ on making the film, they have noted that the properties are attached to huge producers like Steven Spielberg. If they have to pay off the producer fee, the studio could spend more money paying for the producers than the actual film.
If anything, the movie has a lot going for it. Tatum is a bankable box office star, and the Jump Street franchise’s latest entry made bank at the box office. With Men in Black doing the opposite with International, they could use some of that Jump Street hype to get people hyped about the franchise again. You think Will Smith would want to have a role this time?
For now, Tatum is promoting the release of Dog, which comes out in theaters on Feb. 18.
