'Castle Rock' Season Finale 'Romans' Recap: Captive

Freedom comes at a price. Perhaps this is the reason behind the disasters that happen within Castle Rock. In a perfect world, the town moves past its dark origins. However, an anomaly occurs, causing one Henry Deaver to enter the world the other. As chaos engulfs the city, the protagonists struggle with each other. In the end, one thing is sure: there can only be one Henry roaming free.

In the season finale of Castle Rock, chaos runs rampant in the town. Meanwhile, Henry Deaver (André Holland) finally resolves on what to do with The Kid (Bill Skarsgård). While this happens, Molly Strand (Melanie Lynskey) does the Deaver family a huge favor. Eventually, peace returns to the town; but no one knows for how long.

Disastrous Events

When Henry drove away from the B&B crime scene, his car gets stormed by a flock of ravens. This event happens throughout the town. Also, police sirens rang everywhere. Explosions happen in almost every street corner. In addition to this, a prison breakout occurs at the police station later in the episode.

Warden Porter (Ann Cusack) watches as some of Shawshank’s prisoners enter three buses. The prison is scheduled to close very soon, but this was the least of the Warden’s worries. When Porter arrives home, she finds a strange soap statue in her house. Porter knew that The Kid must have left it in her house, so she decides to visit Molly’s office where The Kid first stayed. Porter acted strangely throughout her conversation with Molly before she gave Molly the soap statue. Moments later, one of the prison buses runs Porter over.

While Henry drives away from the crime scene, the rest of his family remain at risk. Wendell Deaver (Chosen Jacobs) arrives back at the town. Wendell heard the same sound that Henry hears, so he decides to follow it into the woods. However, what he finds is a crime scene. As the police officers take care of the area, Willie (Rory Culkin) looks him straight in the eye.

After The Kid’s visit to her home, Molly tries to call Henry, who does not respond. While driving, she finds Ruth Deaver (Sissy Spacek) standing on the Alan Pangborn Memorial Bridge. Luckily, Molly manages to calm Ruth down, bringing her back to the Deaver Home. Henry finally arrives, hugging Ruth tight. As Molly and Henry discuss what is happening, Ruth receives a phone call: it was about Wendell, currently staying in the Police Station.

Henry fetches Wendell from the station. Unfortunately, Officer Reese (Jayne Atkinson) stops Henry from leaving who is a potential suspect to Odin’s (CJ Jones) murder. As Officer Reese spoke to Henry, he hears nothing but the sound in his ear. When Officer Reese finally finishes talking, Henry asks for a phone call. Henry calls Molly, who was bearing bad news.

Molly retells Warden Porter’s story to Henry when she arrives in the Police station. At this point, neither of them knew what to do. Before Molly’s visit time was over, Henry requests her to drive Wendell home back to Boston, where his mother lived. Also, Henry advised her to leave the town and never come back. As Molly walked out of the holding cell, she gives Henry The Kid’s location. Molly drives Wendell to his folks; then she has Jackie Torrance (Jane Levy) watch over Ruth, who peacefully dies in her sleep.

The Police finally arrest The Kid. Henry and The Kid’s final confrontation begins in the prison cells. The Kid insists on believing what he is saying, urging Henry to go into the woods with him. According to The Kid, the woods is some gateway to a parallel dimension; the place where The Kid originated. Still, despite how The Kid’s words made sense to Henry, he still refuses to believe The Kid.

After some time, the police officers order Henry and The Kid to share the same cell. Prisoners from the bus involved in the accident then occupied the other cell. Some of the prisoners suddenly start arguing until one of them pulls out a shank and stabs a fellow inmate. However, this turns out to be a distraction. The prisoners manage to catch the police officers off guard, killing all of them and making their escape. Also, one of the prisoners tosses the key into Henry and The Kid’s cell.

At first, Henry reluctantly exits the cell. When they leave the holding area, he finds Willie lying on the floor, warning him not to go. However, The Kid held Henry at gunpoint, demanding his compliance. Throughout their walk to the woods, The Kid maintained the gun aimed at Henry. Henry starts to hear the ringing in his ear louder than before. Seeing this, The Kid let his guard down. Henry takes advantage of this and tackles The Kid, getting hold of the gun.

A year later, everything seemed fine. The town managed to recover from all the tragedies it experienced. Also, the Deaver family home no longer had a lingering sense of darkness. Henry moved on and continued his work as a lawyer. Also, his relationship with Wendell improved as they celebrated Christmas together. Molly decided to move out of town and spend her days with her Grandmother. However, someone had to pay the price, and it was no other than The Kid. Once again, The kid is back to where he started: locked in a cage, kept away in the now-closed prison.

The show started off with a great introduction to the characters. Also, the decision to air the first two episodes immediately after each other helped the viewers understand the different character backgrounds as well as the setting. The mystery that surrounds The Kid and the town of Castle Rock made each episode begin and end with something unexpected. Lastly, the audience would still understand the entire context of the plot without having to read plenty of Stephen King books. Luckily, Castle Rock has been renewed for a second season, so The Kid’s story is not over yet.
