The town of Castle Rock continues to suffer wildfires, causing local businesses to lose income. Meanwhile, the protagonists go about strange quests. Chaos further engulfs the Deaver family. Also, the arrival of one more family member increases the likelihood of another loss. When an unexpected confession causes lumps in what could have been more than a friendship, the main protagonist decides to go on a journey, looking for answers to an enduring mystery.
In this week’s episode of Castle Rock, Henry Deaver (André Holland) tries to remember what happened during his and his father’s trek to the woods. Under The Kid’s (Bill Skarsgård) direction, Alan Pangborn (Scott Glenn) desperately tries to acquire something for The Kid. Meanwhile, Ruth Deaver (Sissy Spacek) spends quality with her grandson, Wendell Deaver (Chosen Jacobs).
Casualties
After Ruth’s discharge from the hospital, she comes home to her son and grandson, Wendell. Since her partner, Alan, and Henry had some things to deal with, Ruth and Wendell spent their time together. Wendell got to know more about his grandmother; she even let him on a secret. Because of her mental issues, Ruth had a coping mechanism. Ruth interchanges chess pieces with household items. However, her coping mechanism may not be enough when The Kid arrives at their house. Their fate remains unknown at the end of the episode when Alan comes home to The Kid, sitting on the porch with blood on his hand.
Desperation
At the end of the previous episode, Alan confronts The Kid in the woods. Somehow, The Kid knew that Ruth was sick, so he told Alan that he could help Ruth. Because of this, Alan decided to give The Kid a chance and listen to what he had to say. The Kid sent Alan to a strange quest: acquiring Warden Lacey’s car from the junkyard. When Alan got to the junkyard, the car was flattened and was about to be sent to a buyer, but Alan pulls a gun on the driver. The driver, in turn, gives Alan the car, arriving at his house by Sunday.
However, Alan’s actions seem to have done nothing for Ruth. When he arrives home, he finds The Kid sitting on the porch with blood on his hand. When asked what he needed the car for, The Kid tells him to use it as a monument for the late Warden. Alan notices the blood on The Kid’s hand, so he rushes inside the house, finding it in disarray.
Rediscovery
The Kid finding and wearing Matthew Deaver’s suit was not the only startling discovery. Since Henry let The Kid stay at the garage, The kid dug out some old tapes of Henry with Matthew. Henry was deeply disturbed by what the tapes contained, so after he brought The Kid to Juniper Hill, Henry decides to talk to Molly Strand (Melanie Lynskey) to see if she knew anything about what happened. However, when Molly reveals that she killed Matthew Deaver, Henry refused to believe this then he angrily left Molly.
Later that evening, Henry uses the footage as a map. Henry went through the woods, following the landmarks where he and his father stopped. Unfortunately, the video camera’s batteries died out, so Henry aimlessly wandered through the woods when he finds a man sitting at a campfire. At first, the man points a fire iron at Henry, startled by him. However, a second man reveals himself, a man named Odin (CJ Jones). Also, these two men were the same men Henry saw at his father’s funeral.
As Henry decided to talk to the men, he finds out that Odin is deaf and that the second man, Willie, is his interpreter and apprentice. Odin knew Henry’s father as well. To Odin, Matthew was more than just a preacher. Matthew would go out to the woods with Odin to preach to him about ‘The Voice of God’ that he heard in the woods. The story gets even stranger when Odin tells Henry that the ringing in his ears was actually ‘The Voice of God’ or a Schisma, as Odin calls it since he is a man of science.
Furthermore, Matthew received instructions from God about a device that could help its user hear God. While Matthew was not able to create the device, Odin did, and he kept it in his RV. Odin shows the invention to Henry and finally convinces him to enter. At the last moment, Odin revealed that the device made him deaf before he locked Henry inside. Because of this, Henry heard the ringing in his ears louder than he ever did before as he screams in agony.
Castle Rock continues next Wednesday, August 22nd, with “The Queen” on Hulu.
