CASTLE Review: The Nose Knows All

By Geannie Bastian

This week's case involves a very special witness: Mia, who can smell a lot more than the rest of us. Including the killer. Oh, and that Beckett has the hots for Castle - and Hayley doesn't.

Turns out Hayley is hunting a stolen Van Gogh that the killer stole, and Castle as to convince a reluctant Mia to leave her apartment in order to sniff out the killer. This leads to some interesting match ups, especially an interrogation featuring Hayley and Beckett, and a behind the scenes investigation by Castle and Mia.

The best parts of the unconventional match ups? Hayley and Beckett double teaming to take down bad guys is pretty awesome. And when Castle has to take Mia home for a special meal a la Martha to meet her needs? It turns out she's a massive Martha Rogers fangirl.

Ryan and Esposito hit the spot this week too, but we'll get to that in a minute.

Something Stinks for Ryan…and Esposito

When last we left Ryan and Esposito, they were going to take the Sergeant’s exam to see if they could move up at the NYPD, and earn a little extra money. Ryan was particularly worried, with the new baby coming and more money needed. Today the guys get the results. Only, Esposito makes it and Ryan doesn’t.

Things are pretty awkward for a while, and then they get even more awkward. Because on the trail of a suspect, Ryan accidentally shoots Esposito in the butt. Cue many, many butt jokes from all corners. The best though, comes from Castle: Crack Shot Ryan and Asspositio.

When an attempt at an apology and forgiveness go awry, Ryan tries to get Esposito to shoot him in the butt right there in the precinct to make it even. However, Beckett, always “Mom” with these two, tells them if they can’t’t get their act together she will send them both to therapy.

This final set of thoughts sort of tied the Castle and Beckett parallel together really nicely here. It’s not about fairness, it’s about forgiveness. And if needed, you get therapy and work it out. I hope our main couple takes that into consideration going forward.

There’s a three week break coming up, but what looks like an awesome set of episodes to follow. So I’ll be back with another review to get us through that section of the story.

Castle continues Mondays on ABC.
