For all this fandom has struggled this season with Kate’s decision to freeze her husband out when LokStat came calling, now there is some clarity. When Castle was confronted with the same threat, he didn’t involve Kate, either – because, like Kate, he felt he would be putting the life of the person he loved most at risk.

So, for six weeks – Cleverly, the same amount of time that Beckett’s imposed separation lasted, we see what you did there, Castle writers – Castle stayed away, and chased LokStat. He apparently didn’t call, even though he had to know that his family was confused and devastated and worried. They thought he was dead, and they might never see him again. Why? Kate was in danger. And if that meant a little temporary pain, and a life without answers, she’s worth it.

Caskett may be frustrating for fans some days, but the thing is, they’re the same in this. If it comes down to their partner’s life, they’ll risk anything to keep the other safe. It’s a fairly safe bet she won’t be much happier with him than he was with her for making the decision to keep each other in the dark. But, in the end, both acted out of love and fear, with the same goal in mind: protect the person they love most, at any cost. And that’s a powerful story in its own right.
