We now have our first look at Brie Larson as “Captain Marvel!” However, this new image of her in superhero costume has a catch. In the comics, Captain Marvel was commonly depicted wearing a blue and red themed suit—but this time, it’s green. PageSix first posted the image on Twitter, and it shows Larson in costume for the first time while filming in Atlanta.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Larson plays Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who becomes Captain Marvel after her DNA is fused with an Alien’s following an accident. The film is set in the 1990’s and is the first female-centric film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s an exciting premise, given how Ms. Marvel is also set to appear in “Avengers: Infinity War Part 2” in 2019. That said, fans were left wondering—what’s up with her costume?
Why Captain Marvel’s Costume is Green
ScreenRant offers a simple explanation as to why Larson is sporting a green Captain Marvel suit. We already know that Jude Law is set to appear with Larson as Mar-Vell. In the comics, Mar-Vell, a Kree warrior, first came to Earth wearing a green and white suit and took up the Captain Marvel moniker. Mar-Vell then went on to make necessary upgrades in his suit, eventually settling with the signature blue and red suit with a gold star emblem—which is Carol’s eventual inspiration for her blue and red costume in the comics.
Given how the film will adopt a Kree-Skrull War storyline, Larson’s green costume makes sense. Carol might have snagged the suit from a Kree soldier upon gaining her powers, or it might even be something that we would gradually see, like how the MCU first did a silver Mark I Iron Man suit and eventually became the red and gold suit in the following films. And besides, the photo from PageSix isn’t official, so we have yet to see a release from Marvel on the final colors of the suit, and maybe even an explanation as to why Larson’s outfit is green (assuming that it is the final suit to be used in the movie).
“Captain Marvel” is slated for release on March 8, 2019.
