‘Captain Marvel 2’ In The Works, ‘WandaVision’ Writer Megan McDonnell to Pen Script

Brie Larson is close to suiting up as Captain Marvel once again as a sequel to the 2019 blockbuster film is in the works at Marvel Studios.

The movie raked in $1.1 billion at the box office last year, and her role in defeating Thanos in Avengers: Endgame proved to be another strong point to consider Larson’s character for a second outing. She is, after all, one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise.

WandaVision writer and industry newcomer Megan McDonnell has been tapped to write the script, and her deal is currently being finalized. Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will not return to helm the sequel but are moving to Disney+ to work on a series. The studio is reportedly looking to have a female director to helm Captain Marvel 2.

Details of the epic space-centric MCU movie sequel are still under wraps, although sources say that Captain Marvel 2 will move its setting from the ’90s to the present day—presumably following Carol Danvers’ story after the events of Endgame.

Last year at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige dropped a hint about a possible Captain Marvel sequel. Though the studio kept the hero’s future uncertain, Feige did say that they are keeping her in mind for future movies along with Black Panther 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and even a possible Fantastic Four movie.

Captain Marvel saw Larson play Carol Danvers, the MCU’s first female superhero to have a solo movie. She was a former airforce pilot who got imbued with Kree powers after surviving an explosion containing the alien abilities. She was instrumental in fighting with the Kree against the Skrulls, where the former turned out to be the real villains of the story. Carol then moved on to be one powerful weapon during the war between the Avengers and Thanos’ cohorts in Endgame.

Captain Marvel 2 has no release date set as of yet. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
