Everyone knows Timothee Chalamet as the Kwisatz Haderach of Arrakis, but back in 2017, he was the young lover of a pre-cancelled Armie Hammer in Call Me By Your Name. While the movie pretty much wrapped up the story of Elio and Oliver, it seems that we could be seeing more of Elio in the future.
According to IndieWire, director Luca Guandagnino says that he’s still interested in making a follow-up to Call Me By Your Name. He says, “A sequel is an American concept… It’s more like the chronicles of Elio, the chronicles of this young boy becoming a man. It is something I want to do.”
Just in case it’s been a while since you’ve seen Call Me By Your Name, here’s the trailer:
Here’s the synopsis as well:
It’s the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy, and Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a precocious 17- year-old American-Italian boy, spends his days in his family’s 17th century villa transcribing and playing classical music, reading, and flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel).
Elio enjoys a close relationship with his father (Michael Stuhlbarg), an eminent professor specializing in Greco-Roman culture, and his mother Annella (Amira Casar), a translator, who favor him with the fruits of high culture in a setting that overflows with natural delights. While Elio’s sophistication and intellectual gifts suggest he is already a fully-fledged adult, there is much that yet remains innocent and unformed about him, particularly about matters of the heart.
One day, Oliver (Armie Hammer), a charming American scholar working on his doctorate, arrives as the annual summer intern tasked with helping Elio’s father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of the setting, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.
Not to spoil too much, but the movie ends with Elio finding out that Oliver has been engaged to marry someone else, eventually ending their romance. While the story kind of ends in tragedy for the relationship, it admittedly does leave a lot of room for the character of Elio to grow.
With Chalamet having aged significantly since CMBYN, I’m sure there’s an interesting direction to take an older Elio. We’ll just have to wait until Guandagnino pushes forward with his idea.
We don’t have any official development on a Call Me By Your Name sequel yet, but you can catch Chalamet in Guandagnino’s upcoming movie, Bones and All which comes to theaters Nov. 24.
